Daft Punk / 02 Wireless report

tim and kirk 1 - asylum

Daft Punk were AMAZING! I had problems with Flickr uploading the photos (they are now here) but had a great time, one of the best sets I've seen. EVER.

Started off really wet, both me and Kirk were worried it'd be a wash out, but it actually became really sunny and didn't rain after the first few hours. We met up with Scott [info]tga  and friends and got the tickets - great to see him and catch up. The whole crowd had those funny feather haircuts and dressed in neon! Quite a young ravy crowd.

First act I saw was Datarock - they came over as the Hoodie Hives at first, playing not great punk rock for the first two songs, then went into their album tracks ending on a great 'Fa Fa Fa' not bad, but not great live, I wanted it to be more electronic, and it came over more shambolic...still they all looked like the Unabomber so that's good I suppose (?)

We went for a wander during New Young Tory Club (yawn, I really don't get them) or whatever they are called, and then we went and chilled out in the 02 Blueroom while Plan B's excrable set was on, he samples Kayleigh FFS. Absolutely terrible, so we took the piss from the comfort of seats. The staff seemed to enjoy throwing your change at you, so I lost money on the too dark floor of the 4th stage. Grr.

Next was CSS - how much energy does this band have? It was exhausting just looking at them in the (now) heat - the lead singer had several costume changes she was wearing at once, she must've been hot. Probably the best band performance of the day, they ended on a great Let's Make Love and did a cover of Pretend That We're Dead by L7 which I've played on the latest Radio Clash 121. Brilliant and just like the video in energy and kookiness, Kirk thought they sounded like Tom Tom Club, which suprised me but is very true, but I think via Baile Funk and Post Punk, and like Datarock he liked them. We both fancied the drummer (shown here playing guitar on one song).

Sadly I couldn't get into the tent to see Simian (planning clash!aaaargh!) the only act I wanted to see that I didn't, as all the neon kiddies descended after CSS to see the Klaxons and the rather small XFM tent (doh! Klaxons are slightly big, idiots) was too packed and a massive line was forming...

LCD Soundsystem was on and bumped into some bootlegger friends - Holestar, Ian Fondue, JoolsMF and Rich of Diskoboxx, etc. Sort of heard James Murphy in the background while chatting and watched him but it strangely wasn't that impressive...quite a few bum notes and fluff ups and wasn't the dancefest that Sounds of Silver promised. Hmm. Maybe on my own I'd get into it more but really it didn't catch my attention enough to stop chatting and watch for long. James droned on and I tuned out...

Tried to meet up with Scott several times after Plan B but couldn't find them in the crowd, then before Daft Punk the crowd got so large, packed and scary there was NO chance of making it to the other side where Scott and friends were - sorry Scott! The WHOLE crowd was moshing as you can see on this video so we had to move to the side after a while, too much pushing and Kirk and I weren't enjoying that.

The set rocked and was BETTER than Coachella, they've kept some bits the same, but introduced new bits like the amazing encore and the breakdowns and buildups work far better. The visuals built up also, from minimal lines and slight flashes to faces and video and then the amazing encore with the tron style red suits, which caught everybody out.

My friend Ian Fondue produced a rough tracklist:

01 - Crowd/Intro
02 - Robot Rock/Oh Yeah (snippet)/Touch It (snippet from Busta Rhymes)
03 - Technologic/Voyager
04 - Television Rules The Nation/Around The World (snippet)/Crescendolls
05 - Veridis Quo (Baseline mix)/Too Long (First Half)/Steam Machine (snippet)/Around The World
06 - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger/Technologic (snippet)/Voyager/Too Long (Second Half)
07 - Face To Face/Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger (snippet)/Short Circuit
08 - Aerodynamic/One More Time (Music Sounds Better bit)
09 - Forget About The World (Daft Punk Remix)/The Brainwasher (snippet)
10 - The Prime Time of Your Life/Rollin' & Scratchin'/The Brainwasher/Alive
11 - Steam Machine/Da Funk/Daftendirekt (snippet)
12 - Superheroes/Human After All/Rock'n Roll
13 - Crowd

Plus, the rather lovely encore :

Together/Music sounds better with you

You are completely wrong about Plan B! Besides the fact I want sexual relations with him, he put on a brilliant performance. his lyrics were poignant, delivered with conviction whilst playing brilliantly.

I couldn't help but think that he gave a performance with read heart and soul - something that the Daft Punk's performance lacked!

You are so wrong about Daft Punk - they were very human, after all (hehhee).

Plan B is style over substance - and he ripped a lot of lyrics, and samples - he may be playing them live but they are still rips. He just annoys me.

And he would beat the crap out of you if you tried it om!

The fact he would beat the crap out of me kinda makes him sexually appealing (not that I get turned on by being gay bashed or beaten up - just love the rough looking ones sometimes!)

I should have gone. I should have gone. The flat is just off Ken Church Street. No excuse but inexcusable apathy.
I hear there were tickets on the gate.
Someone I work with, who is not easily impressed by much music, said they were bloody great.
And there's me watching 'The Last King of Scotland'.
